Goal 1 | Economic Development

IUB will drive economic development by creating innovative and collaborative approaches to solving challenging problems and creating transformational opportunities.

As the state’s flagship university, IUB will harness its resources to further drive economic prosperity in the state. Bloomington and the surrounding region will become a more vibrant place to live and work, attracting and retaining top talent. We will amplify regional industry clusters through IUB’s existing and emerging research strengths, building deeper partnerships to drive regional economic development and innovation, and increase opportunities for Indiana businesses. IUB will become a national leader in translational and applied research and, through this work, will improve the lives of people locally, nationally and internationally.

  • Industry clusters. Foster connections between IUB’s disciplinary and interdisciplinary strengths as well as established and emerging industry clusters to drive regional economic development, including the areas of defense, technology and life sciences.
  • Translational and applied research. Create efficient mechanisms to actively advance IUB’s research-to-practice/research-to-field pipelines—locally, nationally and globally.
  • International economic expertise. Leverage IUB’s international capabilities to partner with the Indiana Economic Development Corporation and the U.S. International Trade Administration to attract investments and increase exports by Indiana firms.

Goal 2 | Community Collaboration

IUB will collaborate with communities in Indiana and beyond to work together to address pressing societal needs.

As a top research institution in Indiana, IUB is uniquely positioned to harness its expertise and resources to improve quality of life and quality of place for people everywhere. IUB will integrate and combine disciplinary methods—in the arts and humanities, social sciences, health sciences, business and STEM and professional fields—to creatively tackle our most critical challenges in key areas. Through mobilizing our global resources, we will provide opportunities for the IUB community to make a significant impact through research, teaching and service, deepening our commitment to addressing the challenges facing our state, nation and the world.

Goal 3 | Workforce Development

IUB will respond to state and national workforce needs by expanding programs in areas of high demand and developing new offerings to meet emerging needs.

Over the next seven years, we will work to build new and deeper connections throughout the state, becoming Indiana’s go-to partner and resource for dynamically responding to the most pressing needs in industry and workforce development. Employers across Indiana will look to IUB for employees who are highly educated, globally literate and have the necessary skills to be successful in our increasingly diverse world.

  • Workforce pipeline. Increase enrollment and degree completion within the university’s existing programs of excellence in much- needed fields across the state (e.g., P-12 educators, engineers, nurses, mental health professionals and other medical professionals).
  • Workforce needs. Develop flexible programs, from degrees to certificates, to address emerging workforce needs quickly and nimbly.
  • Employer engagement. Enhance information sharing and connections between students, alumni and potential employers in Indiana.
